We have been parents for 9 1/2 years. We have also managed to avoid the ER until now. But if you are going, go big, and we did. Last night about 5:00, I was starting supper, Jason was in the living room and Wyatt was reading with Davis...on the top bunk. Wyatt decided it was time to get down and just fell. Davis did not really see what happened or how he landed. I was concerned about his head but also about other bones. After a few minutes he threw up and my level of concern jumped. We called our ped's office and continued to watch him. He was lethargic and pale and after he threw up again, we knew it was time to go to the ER with him. We took the big boys to the neighbor and called my mom to come up. When we left, the streets were clear and we had a safe trip to the Plano Children's Hospital ER. We were seen very quickly and the doctor wanted to do a CT scan of his head. At the time, she told us she really didn't expect to find anything, but with his age, the height of the fall and his symptoms, she though it would be the best thing to do. Within 30 minutes, he had an IV and Zofran to settle his tummy. He held still like a champ in the CT scan and was rewarded with a new truck! A short time later, the doctor came back and told us the radiologist had detected a small bleed in his brain. She re-assurred us it was small and they did not expect him to have any trouble, but it was enough to warrant being transported to Dallas Children's where he could be better evaluated by trauma and neuro specialists. Transported meant Wyatt was getting a ride in his own private ambulance. His chariot arrived and I rode shotgun as Jason followed behind us.
I knew a friend of ours was on duty as a nurse downtown and they were suposed to let her know we were on the way and request her to care for Wyatt. That message did not make it and she was surprised to see us! The first question she asked Wyatt when I told her what happened was "which one of your brothers did this to you?" We had a stream of doctors come through and all of them re-assurred us they did not expect an significant problems. After a couple more x-rays and some debate between the specialists, Wyatt was admitted for observation. We made it to a room about 2 am and by 5:30 am the parade of doctors began again! Wyatt woke up hungry, happy and acting like himself again and I was very relieved. We went to see the trains and he played in the playroom and right as the doctor came in to discharge him, all the energy left him and he fell asleep in my arms. She wanted him to nap there and eat one more meal before we got to go home. After he woke up, we fed him and tried to find our nurse. When she came to see him, she told us she still didn't have discharge orders and when listening to him told me she thought she heard a heart murmur. No one has ever heard a heart murmur in him, so I was a little annoyed. We had to wait for the doctor to come examine him again...no heart murmur was detected and he was discharged around 3.
We had a visit from the hospital safety person and a visit from the trauma social worker, but never CPS. We were a little surprised because we had not seen the fall and couldn't tell them exactly what had happened. We also had instructions to keep him from running, jumping, climbing, no wheeling toys, etc... for 2 weeks. Now we have passed that point and he did really well. The activity level is back to normal but he has not been back on the bunk bed. And now he gets to tell everyone about his ride in the ambulance!!
I know it could have been much worse. I know so many people were praying for him and I know God protected his head in that fall. God is so good...ALL the time!
